Hamlin Middle School

In December 2014, Springfield Public Schools and BBT started to create an Education Specification for all future middle schools in their district. With a strong vision and a fully engaged process that included staff, students, and the community, Hamlin Middle School was the first school to be created with these new Education Specification criteria in mind.

Integral to the development of the STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) educational specifications were community members who brought passion, participation, and ideas to the process. They were an essential part of the design team whose initial visions were realized in the final building.

PAST MEETS
FUTURE

With consideration for the larger community, the design celebrates Springfield’s historic lumber mill past through the building form and embraces the future by utilizing new wood technologies. Cross-laminated timber is featured in areas programmed for project-based learning. The student activity areas connect a new educational model with building materials.

A BEACON OF PRIDE

The school is highly visible from major routes through Springfield. The prominent location generates a common interest to share the school with the broader community and passing travelers. The central location of the media center, with its use of glass, help make the building the “Jewel of Springfield.”
