W.E. Miller Elementary School

Following several collaborative eco-charrettes, Bend-La Pine Schools decided to expand the sustainable features of this prototypical elementary school design. When the school opened, it was the only LEED Gold certified educational facility in Oregon east of the Cascade Mountains. The school has developed an environmental science curriculum that includes instruction in such subjects as sustainability, renewable resources, and environmental awareness. From planning through design and construction, along with specialized instruction within the classrooms, Miller Elementary is a true example of sustainable design.

LANDSCAPES

The school’s site was designed to incorporate large areas of natural and restored vegetation that requires little, if any, irrigation. Natural areas, including drainage swales, have been designed as an extension of the classroom.

LIGHT
FILLED

The school is designed around four “neighborhoods” with each neighborhood consisting of six classrooms. All classrooms have an abundance of natural light and natural ventilation that support a healthy learning environment.
